Review: BJ’s Credit Card

bjs-mastercardBJ’s Wholesale Club, in partnership with Comenity Bank, offers you can use to earn rewards toward future BJ’s purchases as well as other perks. We offer our overview & review of the BJ’s credit cards below:

The My BJ’s Perks MasterCard is accepted anywhere MasterCard credit cards are accepted, meaning you can use it just about anywhere. This is a good thing: if you are going to open a new credit line, we here at would much prefer it be a credit line that can be used widely. Many retailers have credit cards accepted only at their chains; BJ’s credit cards are accepted almost everywhere.

The My BJ’s Perks MasterCard offers the following rewards:

  • 3% reward or 5% reward on BJ’s purchases, depending on whether you choose the Perks Plus card (with its $50 annual membership fee first year, and $40 annual fee after that) or the Perks Elite version of the card (with its $100 annual membership fee first year and $75 annual fee after that)
  • 10 cents off per gallon at BJ’s gas stations
  • 2% reward on restaurant purchases and non-BJ’s gas purchases
  • 1% reward on all other card purchases.

Every time you reach $20 in rewards you will get a reward certificate toward future BJ’s purchases. Reward certificates can only be used inside a BJ’s club store, not online.

Note that the annual fees for the cards mentioned above include your BJ’s membership fees, they are NOT in addition to your membership fees. So, you are getting a discount on your membership fee renewal after the first year if you have one of the MasterCard credit cards: a $10 discount for Perks Plus cardholders (bringing the annual fee down to $40) or a $25 discount for Perks Elite cardholders (bringing the annual fee down to $75 after the first year). The annual membership fee is charged to the card automatically; you can opt out of this automatic renewal, but you would then not get the discount.

The interest rate on the BJ’s credit cards may be either 14.99% or 24.99% depending on your credit history. While the 14.99% rate is competitive in today’s market, the 24.99% rate is terrible — either way, don’t get this card if you have a habit of carrying balances on your credit cards, because the interest you pay will essentially cancel out the rewards you receive.
