money-bagCredit unions may offer credit cards and other financial products at better rates than the big banks. While many credit unions have tight restrictions on who can join, many others have very loose rules and will accept almost anyone.

Below is a list of 50+ credit unions, with national or federal credit unions listed first, and state-specific credit unions listed below that. We have also added a few words about who is eligible for each credit union:

National / Federal Credit Unions:

Alabama:

Alaska:

  • – Open to members who live in Alaska, Washington, Maricopa County in Arizona, or San Bernardino County in California.

Arkansas:

  • – Texarkana & Ashdown, AR credit union offers membership to those who “live, work or worship in Bowie, Little River or Miller County.”


California:

  • – California credit union serving the Inland Empire — San Bernardino and Riverside Counties.
  • – Los Angeles, California credit union started as a credit union for aerospace employees but seems to have greatly expanded. You are probably eligible for membership if you live or work in the area.
  • – Credit union offers a way to membership for anyone living in L.A. and throughout southern California.
  • – California credit union is open to you if you live, work, worship, do business, or attend school in San Diego County.
  • – California credit union offers membership to many in the southern part of the state. See for requirements.
  • – California credit union serving those who live or work in the areas around Sacramento. See site for exact membership requirements.
  • – California credit union offers membership to those in northern counties including Sacramento, Napa, Contra Costa and more.
  • – Despite the name, also open to those who live in San Bernardino County, California.

Colorado:

Florida:

Georgia:

  • – Credit union serving “Middle Georgia” including Bibb, Houston and nearby counties.

Illinois:

  • – Illinois CU Offers membership to “anyone who lives, works, or maintains an address in any of the following counties in Illinois: Madison, Macoupin, Montgomery, Bond, Fayette, Calhoun, Greene, Jersey, Pike, Morgan, Scott, Sangamon, Clinton, Monroe, or St. Clair.” Certain employee groups are also eligible. on eligibility.

Indiana:

  • – This credit union has a mixed geographical territory, including the areas in and around Fort Wayne and Marion, Indiana as well as Corinth, Mississippi and Gastonia, North Carolina. Certain employee groups outside these areas are also eligible.

Maine:

Massachusetts:

Michigan:

Mississippi:

Missouri:

Nevada:

  • – Credit union is open to those who “live, work (or regularly conduct business in), worship, volunteer, or attend school in Salt Lake County, Utah; or within a 12-mile radius of the Mesquite, Nevada U.S. Post Office.” Others are eligible, too.

New Hampshire:

  • – Offers membership to those in southern New Hampshire and Massachusetts.

New York:

  • – Credit union for government employees in the city of New York, as well as some of which you might be a part.
  • – New York credit union open to almost anyone living or working in Nassau or Suffolk counties.

North Carolina:

  • – Credit union serving these NC counties: Buncombe, Haywood, Henderson, Jackson, Swain, Madison, Graham, Macon, or Transylvania Counties
  • – North Carolina credit union will accept just about anyone as a member, though you might have to jump through a few hoops if you don’t immediately qualify. The only way to see the eligibility requirements for membership online is to try to open an account.
  • – North Carolina state employees as well as families and are eligible for this credit union.
  • – This credit union has a mixed geographical territory, including Gastonia, North Carolina. Certain employee groups outside these areas are also eligible.

Ohio:

  • – Ohio credit union based in the Cincinnati area offering membership to those nearby as well select employer groups, including anyone working for Macy’s, no matter where you are located.
  • – Not to be confused with the CU above, this Ohio credit union (Barberton) has a fairly small number of employer groups and their families qualifying for membership.

Oklahoma:

Tennessee:

Texas:

Utah:

Virginia:

Washington:

Wisconsin:
