Review: Sony Credit Card

sony-credit-cardIf you’re a big Sony fan — maybe you’re saving up for a Sony TV or a PlayStation — you might be interested in the , a Visa credit card that allows you to earn rewards toward future Sony purchases. Below is a brief over / review of the card:

The Sony Visa offers a points program with the following formula:

  • 5 points per dollar on Sony purchases (but you have to submit purchase confirmation via a Sony Rewards Bonus Points form to get all the points, yuck)
  • 3 points per dollar on music and video downloads, movie theaters and rentals, and digital streaming and subscription services
  • 1 point per dollar on all other purchases.

Your points can then be used toward future Sony purchases, including electronics, games, movies, music, “VIP” experiences and more.

In addition, you get 5,000 bonus points after your first purchase with the card.

Oftentimes we are leery of cards like the Sony Card because they can come with very high interest rates. In this case, though, that is less clear — those with good credit might be able to get a Sony Visa with an interest rate as low as 14.24%, but you also could be approved at a rate as high as 24.99%, which you really don’t want to do. So, if you have a good credit history and a love of Sony products, this could be a good card for you. But if you have a more shaky credit past, then don’t let the rewards this card offers fool you into getting a card with a very high interest rate. (And remember that you should be paying off your full balance each month regardless of a card’s interest rate, otherwise you’ll pay more than your rewards will ever be worth!)

The Sony credit card is issued in partnership with Capital One. You’ll find .
